    Drivers and Barriers of Mobile Phone Remanufacturing Business in Indonesia: Perspectives of Retailers

    Remanufacturing is deemed to be effective in reducing WEEE. Existing studies on remanufacturing mostly focus on operational issues, product acquisition, and pricing. However, some doubts about remanufacturing business arise in developing countries, where there is less regulation on remanufacturing and less environmental awareness. This study aims to investigate the prospects of remanufacturing business from the retailers' perspectives through in-depth interviews on three retailers in Surabaya, Indonesia. The main drivers for mobile phone remanufacturing business are its affordable and competitive price, big demand for popular mobile phones and high-end mobile phone, the opportunity for specification upgrade, and its suitability with the needs of Indonesian people. The main barriers for remanufacturing business are the possibility for cannibalizing new mobile phones' market share, the uncertainty of core supply, discontinuity of replacement part supply, lack of product knowledge among consumers and retailers, hesitation of retailers to sell remanufactured products, and lack of strict and clear regulations about remanufacturing business. Findings of this study provide insights to prospective mobile phone remanufacturers of what needs to be tackled to start a prosperous business. On the theoretical side, it provides complementary knowledge to existing studies that have been conducted mostly on countries that have higher environmental awareness

    Drivers and Barriers of Consumer Purchase Intention of Remanufactured Mobile Phones: A Study on Indonesian Comsumers

    The ever increasing waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) motivates industries to perform closed-loop supply chain (CLSC). Remanufacturing, one form of CLSC, has been widely practiced especially in developed countries. In addition to landfill reduction, remanufacturing also saves energy and conserves natural resources. While several studies have been devoted to evaluate its business and technical aspects, little effort is given to explore the acceptance of remanufactured short life-cycle products such as mobile phone. Mobile phone encounters functional and psychological obsolescence. As a country with the fourth largest mobile phone users in the world, Indonesia needs to tackle the vast waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that comes from obsolete mobile phones. This study investigates the drivers and barriers of consumer purchase intention of remanufactured mobile phones. Case study was conducted through in-depth interviews on thirteen respondents. These respondents represented different age groups, gender, and social classes. Two key drivers of consumer purchase intention are affordable price and upgraded specification. Among the main barriers are regulatory concern, trend concern, and obsolescence concern. Depending on the level, perceived quality and quality assurance can be either drivers or barriers. The implication of this study is that mobile phone remanufacturers should focus on providing phones with upgraded specification at an affordable price and to provide consumer information about the remanufacturing process. This study also emphasizes the urgency for the government to impose strict regulation that protect consumers from counterfeit products

This study recommends remanufacturers to focus on providing upgraded specification at an affordable price and providing information about the remanufacturing process. This study also argues the urgency for the government to enforce rigorous regulation against counterfeit products
